"Leviathan" emerged from Morgan Ashcom's experiences at the remote community of "Skatopia," an outsiders oasis in southeastern Ohio. Originally he was drawn to make these photographs by the potential to reconcile the rural landscape of his youth with the urban skating culture he was part of for thirteen years. He had found himself on another farm a warped doppelganger of his childhood home. The identity of things seemed slightly altered and with this as his guide, he stepped away from his presumed knowledge of where he was. Although these photographs were made in the rolling hills of Appalachia, themes of escape and confrontation with the unknowable on the sea began to appear in the pictures. The sequence of photographs in "Leviathan" suggests a subjective narrative where disparate cultures and geographies have converged.
